I’m going to Toronto in a couple weeks, and I wanna know what sort of car stuff to look forward to. And I have two more specific questions....
1. How can I get some Canadian Tire money? I like to bring home foreign currency, but I already have enough normal Canadian money. I want CT bills.
2. What are the chances of me finding a Nunavut/NWT polar bear license plate that isn’t ridiculously overpriced?

1. Buy stuff at Canadian Tire. It’s really a points program from waaaaaaaaaaaay back before points cards were a thing.
2. In Toronto? I’d think nil. Then again I’ve never looked.

1. Buy something g at Canadian Tire. It has to be over a certain amount I think so check in to that.
2. Slim. Check on Kijiji and see if you can find one and plan something before you get up here.

Do you need to spend a certain amount, or would I be able to just buy some valve stem caps or something else cheap?
Damn, oh well. It’s not the most important thing, but I definitely want to at least see one in person.

Depends. You should get a minimum of a 5cent bill, regardless of what you buy. If you want bigger bills, or an assortment, you need to spend more. Not sure how they are tiered though.

In Toronto, you can find loads of stuff. There used to be a Viper ACR that would tear up and down Front Street. I’ve seen a Niva, a Ranchero, numerous Bentleys, and a whole fuckton of other exotics. If you like more hipstery cars, go to Kensington. If you like fancy cars, stay downtown.
To answer your first question, shop at a Canadian Tire. The one I know of might be a little far, but there’s also one a few blocks west of Yonge (pronounced “Young” [this city is stupid]) on Dundas. Fun fact: there’s a burger chain up here that accepts Canadian Tire money as payment for a burger.
For the second one, slim to none, as others have said. It’s a long drive from the territories.

Not sure about car stuff, but I believe this is pride week if you’re into that sort of thing (if not, stay away from Church and Wellesley). Toronto also has the Pan am games starting up soon so traffic ought to be fun (that’s car related, right?)

To answer this, I believe it’s .5% of your purchase with cash or debit (not credit).

DO NOT DRIVE IN THE HOV LANE!!!
Seriously, they’ll give 3 demerit points on your license plus a fine if you get caught.

My sister is really into LGBT issues and stuff, so she’d love that! Of course, if that’s this week, then we’ll miss it.

I can’t answer your questions, but go here...
it is near the airport and get a smoked meat sandwich.

Cool, thanks!
Yeah, that’s kind of why I want it. I remember reading somewhere that, at least for a while, a lot of places accepted Canadian Tire money as regular currency. Not sure how accurate that is, but I just like unusual money. (CT money is actually second on my most-wanted list, after only a pair of $1 and $100,000,000,000,000 Zimbabwe notes)
It’s a long drive, sure, but I’ve seen my fair share of Alaskan plates down here in Atlanta, and that’s a shit ton farther. So, you never know. Of course, I don’t think I’ve seen one of those for sale here, so I guess there’s that...

Now that looks good! I’ll have to get my dad to take me while my mom and sister (who are losers vegetarians) do something else. Thanks!

Spend enough money in a single transaction at Canadian Tire and you’ll get some back. Or ask around, because every single Canadian household has a drawer full of them.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but it won’t happen. I think a good fraction of the NWT population makes their money selling these.

It used to be a lot higher. I remember buying something and getting a bunch of them...

Closer to downtown, also try Caplansky’s for smoked meat.
Sorry for cruising this thread, just grew up in Toronto and as much as I hate the city, I like sharing stuff that will help others enjoy it.

Yeah, they’ve really cut it over the years. Still, depending on your shopping habits, you can amass a fuckton of cash. My grandmother bought a barbecue once with CT money.

You just stop by Canadian Tire and buy stuff. That’s how you get Canadian Tire Money.
As for NT plates, you could check Kijiji, as mentioned, but you aren’t likely to get one.
Also, please take the 400-series highway speed limits with a grain of salt. It says 100, but most people are doing 120-130.
What are you planning on doing when you are there?

Protip: If you want Crappy Tire money, don’t use plastic for your purchase. Cash only.

I feel for the cashier, considering the biggest one is like a toonie.

Full disclosure: I’m from the US, but I pass for a Canadian so well that Canadians think I’m lying to them.

Good luck on the plate. I have friends in Ontario, Alberta and BC on the lookout for me. I would pay up to $25. No luck for about 3 years.

I dunno. We’re going to Niagara Falls at some point, but beyond that I really have no clue. I think we’re mostly just visiting for the sake of visiting.

Behold $15 in Canadian Tire money.

Find Toronto oppos. Cletus44 (or one of the 44s. Never keep it straight) or Peter Sw wrangler should be able to hook you up.
or drive an hour and a half west and I will hook you up. I recently switched to the app so I don’t get any paper money anymore. But for you, I would look. Or buy something. They know me there. I buy too much crap.

1. To blend in, call it “Crappy Tire.” And yes, as the comments indicate, they foist this on you when you make a purchase. Urban legends abound of Canadians passing off Crappy Tire money as real Canadian currency in some of the more gullible parts of the US.
2. Toronto is still thousands of miles away from the north. You can probably find one just as easily/hard sitting at home on the internet as you could here.
The other “car thing” you can look forward to, btw, is bad traffic. The Pan Am Games are in town, and the left lane of every highway is a temporary HOV lane, requiring 3 people. As much as I hate to give this advice to an Oppo, consider public transit or taxis to get around downtown.

Waiting for someone to say ask for it at the currency exchange.

If you are willing to drive the QEW to Niagara, you could go the other way if there’s something going on at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.
Just a thought.

Good luck getting through Toronto during the Pan Am games. Traffic will be a nightmare. As for Crappy Tire money, I am not sure if you can still get it from Crappy Tire. I thought they switched to the point system. No clue where you might find a Nunavut plate. Try ebay?

It is really a rip off. But then again money or not I’d be there anyways soooo.
I bought like CAD $400 of tires there and barely got 50 cents. I mean it was still the best tires at the best price...but 50 cents on a $400 dollar purchase? C’mon man!!

We still have cash. You can sign up for the points system if you’d like. Source: I work there.
